Halloween is celebrated by a number of countries each year on October 31st, with typical festive Halloween activities including trick-or-treating, carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, and telling scary stories.
Ahead of this year’s “All Hallows’ Evening”, NASA has released a photo taken by the Hubble Space Telescope showing the planet Jupiter’s Great Red Spot taking on a Cyclops appearance as a pupil becomes visible at the center of the 16,000 km (10,000-mile) diameter anti-cyclonic storm.
Thankfully, The Giant Planet hasn’t actually developed a fully formed eye to watch over the Earth, but the illusion was created by the Jovian moon Ganymede moving across the center of the Great Red Spot. Furthermore, the image was taken earlier this year on April 21st, with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3, but no one can doubt Nasa’s impecable timing in waiting until now to reveal the startling photo. Following its release, a Nasa press statement, said:
“For a moment Jupiter ‘stared’ back at Hubble like a one-eyed giant Cyclops.”
